White Walnut Estates at The Kitchen at Middleground Farms

We are so excited for our Winter Winemaker’s Dinner Series and sharing our kitchen for a fun and informative demonstration cooking class all about pairing Oregon wines with seasonal food! For this dinner, we welcome winemaker Chris Mazepink.

Chris Mazepink, White Walnut Estate

Chris Mazepink, Winegrower / Winemaker

Chris Mazepink has deep roots in wine, having been head winemaker at such esteemed Oregon wineries as Archery Summit, Shea Wine Cellars, and Benton Lane. There was a long period in Chris’ career where his winemaking efforts were influenced more by a targeted house style of wine rather than a pure expression of terroir. White Walnut Estate is Chris’ departure from these set winemaking parameters and into an authentic exploration of the site that is instead focused on the attentive farming of a remarkable estate vineyard and farm.

For Chris, the most honest form of winemaking is to be a conduit of the energies present in the vineyard. This is reflected in his choice of diverse clonal selections, biodynamic and organic viticulture, and even the choice of fermentation vessels: Concrete tanks from Italy, Terracotta Amphora from Tuscany, and Wooden tanks from Burgundy. These old-world fermentation vessels themselves are forces of life, constructed by artisans utilizing natural materials and ancient technologies. The wines of White Walnut Estate are hence a unique fingerprint of place, and Chris’ winegrowing and winemaking decisions are made solely around the path of least resistance in letting this story be told through the bottle.

More About White Walnut Estate

White Walnut Estate is a USDA Certified Organic & Demeter Certified Biodynamic vineyard rooted in the epicenter of Oregon’s heralded Dundee Hills. Formerly a walnut orchard, the property had been unattended for several generations and was completely overgrown with bramble when Chris Mazepink purchased the site in 2013. Chris sensed the potential of the property to become one of Oregon’s premier vineyard sites—- after all, the site abuts the estate vineyards of legendary Oregon wineries Domaine Drouhin and Archery Summit.

Chris and his sons, Archer and Charles, cleared the land, by hand, in the summer of 2014 and then planted it to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 2015 and 2016. They preserved the remaining walnut trees on the property that continue to produce fruit and are now well over 70 years old, standing stoic amongst the vines. At 6.3 planted acres of vineyard, the flavors expressed in the first three harvests are remarkably complex in aroma, flavor and texture while also pulsing with energy. It’s this energy, this life force of both vine and land, that winemaker Chris Mazepink strives to cultivate in the farm, the winery and then deliver to your table.
