Matt & Kelly Austin

Winemaker & Owners

After previous stints as a punk rock guitarist and tax attorney, a growing passion for wine led Matt to leave his legal career behind and enroll in the Northwest Wine Academy in Seattle, WA in 2014. After spending time working for several well-known Washington wineries, Matt and his wife Kelly, a former fashion designer, purchased a small, run-down vineyard property at auction in the Walla Walla Valley, which became the site of their winery Grosgrain Vineyards (pronounced grow-grain), which is named for a textile reminiscent of the pattern of vineyard rows.

In a region that is better known for powerful red Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, Grosgrain is dedicated to a fresh and restrained style, with an uncommon emphasis on white and sparkling wines as well as finessed, elegant reds. Grosgrain’s estate vineyards, now totaling 23 planted acres across two sites, are organically farmed and include a number of varieties new to the region such as Vermentino, Fiano, Ribolla Gialla, Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault. These varieties are well-acclimated to Walla Walla’s warm, dry climate and volcanic soils, making them a compelling choice for the future of our region.

Wine Enthusiast magazine recently named Matt one of 5 producers redefining Washington Wine.

More About Grosgrain Vineyards

In 2014, Matt and Kelly left their careers as an attorney and a fashion designer in California for a new life in the Pacific Northwest. After Matt returned to school to study enology and spent time working with several Washington wineries, they stumbled upon the auction of a small vineyard on the Southside of the Walla Walla Valley.

Planted with uncommon varieties, these first 5 acres became Grosgrain Vineyards, a winery dedicated to organic farming and wines of freshness and elegance. The development of a subsequently acquired 80-acre property has allowed them to expand their range of grape varieties, with many unique or rare to the Walla Walla region.
