Tony Rynders

Tony Rynders

Co-owner and Winemaker

Tony Rynders began working in the wine business in 1989 at the family owned Mirassou Vineyards in San Jose, CA.  Convinced that this was his calling, he then attended the University of California at Davis and obtained a Master’s degree in Enology and Viticulture in 1992.

Rynders continued to obtain winemaking experience with harvests in Napa, northern Italy, South Australia, and Tuscany. He has held permanent winemaking positions at Argyle Winery (two years) as assistant winemaker, Hogue Cellars (3 years) red winemaker, and Domaine Serene Winery/Rockblock Cellars (10 years) as head winemaker.

During his tenure at Domaine Serene, Rynders’ wines were among the most highly acclaimed in the country.  Over his 10 years as head winemaker, Rynders developed more than 25 different wine offerings for both Domaine Serene and Rockblock.

Rynders launched his own wine consulting business, Tony Rynders Consulting, in 2008.  He has since consulted on winery design, vineyard design and brand establishment. In 2010, he established Tour de Force Wine Company, which provides a custom winemaking home for his core clients. Rynders has achieved notoriety for developing wines for luxury wine projects.

In 2008, he developed and launched his own winery, Tendril Wine Cellars, with focus exclusively on small-lot Oregon Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The five Pinot Noir offerings range from unique barrel-fermented white offering to a 100 % whole cluster red wine.  Each wine requalifies for its position in the line-up each and every year. Total case production is a miniscule 800 cases.  he wines are always allocated and highly acclaimed.

In 2014, Tony added a second label called Child’s Play.  The current offerings include Blanc de Blancs sparkling wine, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Rose of Pinot Noir and Malbec, with the original label artwork being created by his two daughters. Child’s Play wines are fresh and fruit driven in style and offer delicious wines at a great price.

More About Tendril Wine Cellars

At Tendril Wine Cellars, the “essence” of truly great wine begins and ends in the vineyard. They chose the name, Tendril, because it is an integral part of the grape vine itself. This humble yet visually appealing curly “appendage” is how the young shoots attach to the trellis and pull themselves up. Without tendrils, the shoots would simply crawl along the ground and the grapes would perish long before ripening. An annual and all-encompassing pursuit, the name Tendril honors the grapevine, the foundation for all truly great wine.

Their vision is “slow wine.” Everything they do is towards the best possible wines and it simply takes more time: continual interaction with vineyard, adaptive winemaking, separate small-lot fermentations, and longer aging. It is a process rather than a production, and not always successful.
